Child psychiatry is a hard subject to define, but it might be said to be primarily the behavioural and emotional disorders of childhood.

A cardinal feature of child psychiatry is the fact that the child should be seen in the context of a family - any problems are an interaction between child, family and environment. Parenting difficulty is thus an integral part of child psychiatry.

Child psychiatry is not the sole province of people with medical degrees - psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, nurses and teaches have integral roles to play in the treatment of childrens' mental health.
