Toxins and drugs may cause renal injury by:

  • idiosyncratic immunological reactions e.g. methicillin
  • acute toxic effects e.g. mercuric chloride
  • chronic toxic effects e.g. analgesic abuse

There are two main syndromes of drug-induced tubulo- interstitial nephritis:

  • acute drug-induced interstitial nephritis
  • analgesic abuse nephropathy
