A histone is a simple, basic protein which interacts with the DNA double helix to form a nucleosome. There are several types of histone; each nucleosome is derived from 2 each of histone:

  • H2A
  • H2B
  • H3
  • H4

Histone H1 facilitates the next level of structure with nucleosomes coiling to produce a chromatin strand.
