Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of striated muscle fibres with the release of myoglobin into the blood and ultimately the urine.

It may occur after trauma to muscle, either of an obvious form such as crush injury, or less obviously in situations where an elderly person has fallen onto a hard floor and lain inactive for some time.
