The principles of an exclusion diet are:

  • basic diet is continued for 2 weeks - during this period the patient maintains a diet of symptoms and foods eaten
  • after the 2 week period, there is a gradual reintroduction of food items one at a time, at an intervals of 2 days
  • tinned and packet foods should be avoided because of possible preservatives
