  • fast the patient
  • optimize the patient medically ie treat infection, stabilise diabetes, improve lung function in asthmatics, start prophylactic antibiotics etc.
  • administer bowel and skin preparation as necessary
  • start prophylaxis against deep venous thrombosis if indicated
  • catheterise and insert NG tube as required
  • arrange interoperative X rays or frozen section as required
