For immediate safety:

  • assess the scene for those at immediate risk
  • make sure there is no danger to yourself or others
  • park defensively, if necessary at an angle to deflect another vehicle away from casualties and rescuers
  • use warning triangles and hazard lights and if possible send someone well back to warn and slow down traffic
  • turn off all engine ignitions and forbid smoking
  • send bystanders to summon ambulance, police and if needed a fire crew to prevent fire and release anyone trapped
  • triage casualties and prioritise your actions
  • remember that paramedics have vastly more experience and training than most GP's
